Match Report from 20th Feb 2010

Nailsea travelled to Frome hoping to continue their recent run of improved form against a team just below them in the table.

The opening minutes were even with no team on top. This all changed on 12 minutes when a perfectly weighted through ball by Russ Driver found Sam Long who neatly found the back of the net to give the visitors the lead.

Frome hit back halfway through the first period when after a good passing movement keeper Andy Fellows good save only pushed the ball into the path of a Frome player to score the equaliser.

Nailsea then stepped up the pressure and could have gone in front if Sam Long and James Lee could have converted chances when one on one with the home keeper. Russ Driver was unlucky when his shot was well saved. Minutes before half time the impressive Driver shot from 25 yards with the ball hitting the back of the net before the keeper had chance to move. Nailsea just about deserved their interval lead.

The opening minutes of the second half saw neither team in control until on 55 minutes with a move taken from the training ground Nailsea scored. A long throw from James Taylor was headed into the danger area by James Lee for Matt Vickers to connect with a sweetly struck volley to give Nailsea a two goal cushion. This must have pleased the management team.

The visitors then had their best spell of the match with Sam Long gaining in confidence after a run in the team causing problems with his wing play. The Frome keeper distinguished himself with saves from Driver and Vickers.

After 80 minutes Campbell Bannerman replaced James Lee in attack, shortly afterwards Sam Long gave way to Jack Summerell. With 3 minutes to go a cross from the left was deflected in his own net by a Nailsea defender to give the visitors a nervous time before the referee blew to end the match with Nailsea worthy winners.

Another precious 3 points to give Nailsea some clear space between themselves and the relegation dogfight at the foot of the table. Next week thoughts turn to cup action for the visit to First Division Saltford.
